Details for the Online Workshops:
** 5-Workshop Series: Motivational Interviewing for Working with Families. **

 

This series of 5 workshops (2 hours each week for 5 weeks) provides skills training in Motivational Interviewing specific to the context of those working with families, e.g., Home Visitors, Classroom-based teachers, Home-Based Educators, Family Advocates, Father Engagement specialists, Parent Educators, etc. 

 

The scenarios and videos used in this training will be of challenging situations when working with a caregiver/family, e.g., a caregiver needing to make a special needs appointment for her child but reluctant to do so; discussions about health situations and healthy eating for a child; goal setting for school-readiness; increasing caregiver motivation to accomplish a child’s developmental milestones, etc. The MI strategies will focus on increasing a caregiver’s motivation to commit to parenting behaviors that result in positive outcomes.

** 5-Workshop Series: Motivational Interviewing for Working with Families with Substance Use Issues. **

This series of 5 workshops (2 hours each week for 5 weeks) provides skills training in Motivational Interviewing specific to the context of those working with families dealing with substance use issues.

 

The scenarios and videos used in this training will be substance use related, e.g., a caregiver using alcohol or cannabis that affects parenting ability and causes consequences like a letter from the school for consistent lateness; caregiver concerns about legal issues like child welfare involvement. The MI strategies will focus on increasing a caregiver’s motivation to acknowledge and address substance use issues affecting the family, and encourage caregiver commitment to making a behavior change through exploring ways to increase caregiver motivation and confidence to make a plan and stick to it.

Cost: $499 per participant

** 5-Workshop Series: Motivational Interviewing for Working with Fathers. (launching in Feb 2027!) **

This series of 5 workshops (2 hours each week for 5 weeks) provides skills training in Motivational Interviewing specific to the context of those working with fathers.

 

The scenarios and videos used in this training will be related to examples of working with fathers. The MI strategies will focus on engaging fathers and increasing intrinsic motivation for increased involvement in their child’s life and commitment to parenting goals for positive child outcomes. We know from research that fathers who are involved in their child’s life:

  • Have better physical and mental health

  • Live longer

  • Have less depression

  • Are more motivated to reduce alcohol and substance use

  • Are more driven to find stable, secure jobs

In addition, we will explore MI strategies to enhance a mother's intrinsic motivation to include a father in child development roles. We know from research that involved fathers are good for mothers:

  • Less likely to smoke during pregnancy

  • Have a healthier birth

  • Have a lower risk of post-partum depression

  • Lower parenting stress

Cost: $499 per participant

** 3-Workshop Series: Motivational Interviewing for Supervisors, Managers, Coaches, and Directors. **

This series of 3 workshops (2 hours each week for 3 weeks) provides training in:

  • The parallel process of staff working with families/supervisors working with staff. 

  • Strategies to help staff find their own personal motivation for working with families and effectively address challenging situations.

  • Strategies to enhance collaborative communication with staff.

  • Strategies to increase HOVRS scores. 

  • How MI helps decrease professional burnout and support staff retention: staying aligned with values in complex systems.

Cost: $470 per participant
